It’s cold and snowy out there for some of us, so let’s all get tropical with a super-powered Tropical Green Smoothie. I got this great recipe from my friend Karen Ring. The drink has a wonderful smooth and creamy consistency to it. It’s delicious, hydrating and very energizing. You’ll feel the magic hit you right away as you drink.
Coconut water is the most hydrating drink on the planet and is a great base for this smoothie. You can buy the real deal, young Thai coconuts at most health stores or foreign markets. Or you can buy coconut water on the shelf in grocery stores everywhere.
Another fascinating fact about coconut water is this: it is almost the same as blood plasma. In fact it was used for emergency transfusions during WWII. When you combine coconut water with chlorophyll rich greens, you are giving yourself an instant blood transfusion. Remember, hemoglobin is essentially converted plant blood (chlorophyll). Hence a blood transfusion in a glass!
To take it up another notch, try adding a teaspoon of the immune-boosting superfood Spirulina. The health benefits of Spirulina alone are off the charts. Spirulina is a single-celled algae that contains the highest concentration of protein by weight of any food. It’s also incredibly rich in chlorophyll, enzymes, phytonutrients, antioxidants and even helps in the production of stem cells.
Handful of Greens (kale, spinach, collards, etc)
¼ fresh Pineapple, peeled but include core, this is where most of the bromelain is. (Bromelain is an enzyme that helps with protein digestion)
1 ripe banana
1 teaspoon of Spirulina
Blend. Add water and ice if needed.
Sit back with an attitude of Gratitude and enjoy!
I was given this recipe by raw food chef Khepra Anu who is featured in The Healing Effect movie. For those of you who don’t know Khepra, he is the owner and raw food visionary behind Khepra’s Raw Food and Juice Bar restaurant in Washington DC. When I visited DC a few months ago, I ate at his joint every single day I was in town! I also brought all of my friends, so they’ve become regulars just like me!
Back to the salad: Straight up, this salad is BOMB. It’s the most flavorful salad experience I have ever had. The olive oil, lime juice and coconut nectar make an out-of-this-world sweet and tangy dressing. Then, as you dive into the greens, you’ll find pomegranate seeds exploding in your mouth with every delicious bite. Only nature can make something this good!
Just a little natural news about pomegranates: Did you know that pomegranates are powerful anti-oxidants with anti-cancer and immune supporting effects. Not only that, pomegranates lower cholesterol and blood pressure – plus they protect against depression and osteoporosis. Who knew that something so tasty could also be so amazing for you!
So let’s get to it y’all. Here are the ingredients:
- 2 pomegranates
- 1 medium red onion
- 1/2 cup of fresh thyme
- 1/2 fresh jalepeno or habenero pepper
- 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil
- 1/3 cup fresh lime juice
- 1/4 cup coconut nectar
- sea salt to taste
METHOD: Open and squeeze pomegranates into bowl with cut up kale, letting pomegranate juice and seeds spread over kale. Add onion, pepper, thyme to food processor with S-blade and pulse a few times. (By the way, if you don’t have an S-blade, just dice the onion, pepper and thyme into tiny pieces. Anyway you cut it, it’s going to be delicious). Add mixture to kale along with remaining ingredients. Mix well, enjoy!

Handful of Kale and Collard Greens (however any greens will do)
6 – 8 Carrots
1 Apple cored
Juice it up, sit back and enjoy!
I can’t say enough about this oatmeal except that it is my favorite meal of the day. It’s incredibly delicious, filling, energizing and nutritious. It blows away the packaged stuff we ate as kids. I use oat groats which are pictured above. These are the whole cereal grains and look a little like brown rice. However, you can use steel cut oats if you don’t have the groats. Here’s how you make it:
Take 1 cup of OAT GROATS (or STEEL CUT OATS) and pour them into a large bowl. Then cover the oats with WATER and soak them for around 12 hours.
After soaking the oats, drain out all of the water and pour oats into a FOOD PROCESSOR.
Next, add 1/2 of an APPLE cored into the food processor. Cut the apple into small chunks.
Then, add a 1/3 cup of RAISINS into the food processor.
Next, sprinkle ground CINNAMON on top of all ingredients in the food processor.
Add 2 tablespoons of WATER into the food processor.
Mix all ingredients in food processor for several minutes until it reaches a smooth, creamy consistency.
Serve yourself some in a bowl.
**To take it up another notch and give it a little crunch, try sprinkling CHIA SEEDS and WALNUTS on top.

My raw food chef friend Samantha Bonanno showed me how to make this raw ice cream and it’s simply the best ice cream you will EVER have! It’s rich, creamy, chocolatey, peanut-buttery and amazing. Coconut meat and cashews serve as the base.
**To do this, you’ll need to get your hands on 2 – 3 young coconuts and extract the water and coconut meat. You will also need an ice cream maker. Trust us: it’s worth the effort!!!
Here are the ingredients:
One tightly packed cup of coconut meat
Two cups of coconut water
One cup of cashews
1/2 cup of raw cacao powder
1/2 cup of agave nectar
1/2 cup of raw peanut butter (or raw almond butter)
Combine all ingredients in your blender. Slowly blend away until smooth. (If the batter seems too thin and watery, you can always add another handful of cashews to thicken it) Then add this ice creamy batter into your ice cream maker. Watch the frozen magic happen. Serve & Enjoy!!!
